Kabir, Meera and Malookdas are part of the folk repertoire The resonant
singing of the Rajasthani folk is accompanied by music from simple
instruments like the Baara and Algoza, that usually give a beat or a

Dance is an
expression of human emotions as much as music and it is found in
limitless variations in Jodhpur region. Simple unsophisticated,
dancing is seen in fairs and festivals, the dancing which goes with
the Marwari songs and dancing by women and men where the women carry
a pot or a lighted lamp on their head. |

The brightness of its
daily life, the legends of its heroism and romance are all captured
in the vibrant and evocative music of this desert land. There is a
richness and diversity in Marwari music which comes from a tradition
that is old and undisturbed and from a culture that has inhibited
the best from its neighboring regions. Music, which is rich,
evocative, heroic, plaintive, and joyful, governs all aspects of
Marwari lives. The voices, both male and female, are strong and
powerful. The numerous songs sung by the women reflect the various
feminine moods and strong family ties that govern their lives. There
are songs about the family, comparing every member to the numerous
ornaments worn by women. The splendid monsoon of Jodhpur calls for
special songs without which no celebration is complete. |

The famous Ghoomar
dance,Jodhpur's popular dance derives its name from ghoomna, the
pirouetting which displays the spectacular colours of the flowing ghagra,
the long, skirt of the Ma rwari
women. Men have a range of their own more vigorous dances. The Gair of
Jodhpur is performed in a single file and marital costumes are worn for
effect. Sticks or swords are often used in male dances, and the male
dances. The dance of Kalbelia women is vivorous and graceful
Tribal Music and
Dance
Music
and dances are such an essential part of tribal life that professional
musicians and dancers are redundant. Their dances are generally
accompanied by the beats of the mandal, chang and a variety of other
musical instruments, which provides a lively rhythm to their dance
sequences.
The
Ghoomar is the characteristic dance of the Bhils. Men and women sing
alternately and move clockwise & anticlockwise giving free and intended
play to the ample folds of the ghagra.
Vibrant,
vigorous, graceful, sinuous, plaintive, and martial, the dances of
Marwar evoke the desert in all moods. It is the most lilting tribute to
the spectacular beauty, the undulating sinuousness and the brutal
harshness of the landscape, and to the hardiness and the heroism of the
people who live in this land of kings.

Daal -Baati,
Pachkuta & Bajre-ka-Khich :
Perhaps the best known food is the combination of daal,
baati and churma. Daal being a combination of 5 pulses cooked in Baati
being the bread, which is a ball of kneaded flour baked and soaked in
ghee (clarified butter). This dish is traditionally eaten in the colder
season and is combined with Churma Ladoo’s, a sweet.
As the name sounds, pachkuta has five basic ingredients- sangri, kair &
kumtia, dried red chillies, amchur cooked in oil and basic masalas.
Another delicious cool dish is bajre ki khich. This is a tasty khichidi
made with millet, yoghurt, masala & peas with chopped ginger & turmeric.
